The email below was sent to me recently by the USGA requesting an approximate number of volunteers from GHCC for the 2012 US Women's Open at Blackwolf Run by January 17th. Hundreds of cross country athletes from throughout the Midwest travelled to Wausau and the rolling terrain of the Greenwood Hills Country Club where a challenging course was created to test the skills of those attempting to qualify for the Midwest Junior National Team. Organizers said over 250 athletes took part in the event. Skiers competed in a series of heats, earning points for top finishes. The "sprint" a one kilometer race is unique. "A lot of cross country events you watch them go off into the woods and in an hour or two they come back. This event you can watch the entire one kilometer race unfold in front of you," said Chief of Competition John Hugus. The Wausau event is one of four qualifiers. The skiers with the most points at the end of the four races are asked to join the Midwest Junior National Team which is selected in late January. |
